Makiko Naka completed the doctoral program in Human Culture at Ochanomizu University and earned a Ph.D. Her research spans developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, and psychology and law.
She began her academic career as a Research Associate at Ochanomizu University and subsequently served as Lecturer and Associate Professor at Chiba University, Associate Professor at Tokyo Metropolitan University, Professor at Hokkaido University, and Professor at Ritsumeikan University. She also served as an Executive Director of RIKEN, where she was responsible for international affairs, early-career researcher development, and diversity initiatives. She currently serves as Special Advisor to the President of RIKEN.
Professor Naka has held numerous leadership positions in academic societies, including President of the Japanese Association of Developmental Psychology, President of the Japanese Society for Law and Psychology, Board Member of the Japanese Psychological Association, Board Member of the Japanese Cognitive Science Society, and Member and Associate Member of the Science Council of Japan.
Her research focuses on investigative interviewing of children who are alleged victims of crime or abuse, with the aim of obtaining accurate and reliable information while minimizing psychological burden. She also serves as an expert witness and provides training in investigative interviewing for professionals in the fields of justice, law enforcement, and child welfare.
