The THE World University Rankings by Subject are published annually by Times Higher Education (THE), the UK-based higher education publication, and provide a comprehensive view of academic and research excellence across 11 subject areas.
Research Quality is measured based on the following four indicators:
- Citation Impact (average Field-Weighted Citation Impact, or FWCI, of the institution)
- Research Strength (75th percentile FWCI)
- Research Excellence (number of papers in the top 10% for FWCI worldwide)
- Research Influence (quality of citations)

This subject area is also characterized by a high number of internationally co-authored papers. In addition to ranking first in Japan for Research Quality, HU ranks second nationally in the International Outlook pillar for Business and Economics.
HU will continue to enhance its international presence through initiatives such as communicating its research outcomes to society.
