The Basic Preparing Future Faculty Course in February 2026

The Basic Preparing Future Faculty Course was offered over four days—February 9th, 10th, 16th, and 18th—in the 2025 academic yearSecond Semester. The course aims to help students who aspire to become university faculty members develop an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of university academic staff and to acquire fundamental knowledge and skills in course design. The Course were conducted by Associate Professor Yusuke Sakurai, supported by Professor Toshihiro Yamada, Associate Professor Adilin Anuardi, two Teaching Fellows (TFs), and one Qualified Teaching Assistant (QTA). A total of 35 Japanese and international graduate students from various research fields and programs, including both master’s and doctoral levels, participated in the course.

The program covered a wide range of topics related to university education, such as curriculum theory, teaching methods, higher education studies, online education, copyright, and course evaluation. The course combined instructor-led lectures with interactive learning activities, including microteaching sessions and presentations by an award-winning professor, providing participants with opportunities to connect educational theories with classroom practice. Through group discussions, the participants shared their own educational philosophies and teaching approaches, exchanged opinions, and engaged in reflective learning. The microteaching activity allowed students to design classes that reflected their personal teaching goals and philosophies. For the final assignment, the participants revisited and refined their original lesson plans, which strengthened their practical skills needed for effective course design.

The course brought together students from diverse nationalities and academic disciplines, creating a rich environment for cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary exchange. By sharing ideas and engaging in discussions that transcended disciplinary and national boundaries, the participants gained broader perspectives on university education and lesson design. This meaningful experience is expected to greatly contribute to their future careers as university educators.
